Interhome Volunteers Remove 2,600 Plastic Guards in Surrey Conservation Drive
London, 23 September 2026 – Interhome, a HomeToGo Original, recently partnered with the Surrey Hills Society on a practical conservation initiative at West Horsley Place, near Leatherhead.
In a single day, 12 Interhome UK colleagues improved 440 metres, almost half a kilometre, of newly planted hedgerow at West Horsley Place. The team cleared overgrown vegetation and removed approximately 2,600 protective plastic guards, giving young plants more space and light to thrive.
The recovered guards will now be reused or recycled rather than left to deteriorate in the landscape, helping to prevent waste and reduce the risk of microplastic pollution in the countryside.
The volunteers also coppiced ash trees across an area of approximately 30 square metres, creating space for younger trees and supporting a healthier, more resilient habitat.
The initiative reflects Interhome’s wider approach to sustainability: turning company-wide commitments into practical action in the destinations and communities where its teams live and work. By bringing together biodiversity conservation, plastic-waste prevention, and employee volunteering, the project delivered clear, measurable environmental benefits.
“Meaningful environmental progress often begins with practical local action,” said Saskia Weber, Director of Sustainability at Interhome. “Working alongside the Surrey Hills Society, our UK colleagues turned a day of volunteering into a lasting benefit for the landscape. It is a strong example of how local partnerships can bring our sustainability priorities to life in the destinations where our teams live and work.”
With colleagues based in holiday destinations across Europe, Interhome aims to connect its sustainability priorities with practical local action. Initiatives of this kind give employees the opportunity to work together while making a visible contribution to biodiversity and nature restoration.
